CCD Imaging Chronicles........

The images below represent the progress of my CCD imaging and processing since 1996. It started by first making and using a Cookbook CCD camera for monochrome imaging with my 12.5" Cass/Newt to currently using an SBIG STL6303E with a Kodak CCD array ( 3K x 2K x 9 micron pixels) for high resolution on a 20" Ritchey Chretien made by RCOS.  With home being in rural/suburban New England ( Worcester MA area) with it's limiting light pollution ( limiting magnitude of 4.9 at zenith and north while only 3.5 towards the east ( Boston) and south (Worcester), relatively poor seeing conditions ( most of the time > 3 arcsec FWHM ) and limited cloudless nights, just getting a good imaging run is a rarity. One good night though keeps you going! It is  amazing to see how much better deep sky objects appear in amateur images taken in dark, dry mountain or desert skies such as found in the Southwest US where the seeing conditions are sometimes better than 1 arcsec. However, it is very convenient to have equipment in your own back yard to relieve the stresses of a tough day. Starting in March 2005 I was in "building mode" again with the hands on construction of a new dark site observatory in New Mexico near New Mexico Skies.  3 years was dedicated to designing and building new imaging components , systems and new mount mods for the RCOS20, the move and installation of the 20" and auxiliary scopes, the debugging of all the mechanical and electrical systems, software etc. At times I felt I was in over my head especially equipment and software related to internet remote control. In Feb 4/2007 Heaven's Glory Observatory became remote controllable from anywhere in the world. What an amazing moment when it all came together!  Back at home though I found I needed a scope to just play with and therefore modified my existing concrete pier in HGOI and my portable mount for permanent installation in the home observatory. My "home scope" is a carbon tube 12.5" f/4 Newt Astrograph that I built in 2003. It's rewarding to see this type of scope now being favored by some of the world's leading imagers for deep sky CCD work. It's a great scope for imaging with it's fast f/ratio and large aperture.
